Bayanbulak

for solo viola

Solo viola approx. 8′30″

Program Notes

On plateaus above 3,000 meters~10,000 feet, spring does not officially arrive until July and often concludes hurriedly before September. Bayanbulak is the name of a pastoral expanse at these altitudes, where the sky is darker, the land is devoid of trees, and horses do not need reins as they gallop in parallel to cranes that skim over the green waves of grass.

Bayanbulak is a work in progress with inspiration that primarily stems from Mongolian music, encompassing Khoomei (throat singing), Morin Khuur (horse-head fiddle), and Urtyn duu (long song). Thanks to Kielor Tung and David Ornelas for their suggestions in the instrumentation.

Premièred by Hannah Rose Nicholas, viola on December 4, 2023 at Lang Concert Hall, Swarthmore, PA
