Program Notes
King Ling of Ch’u, birth name Jwei, was a notorious tyrant in Chinese history, ruling the State of Ch’u from 540 to 529 BC during the Zhou dynasty. After a civic uprising, he became a fugitive and soon after took his own life. His childhood playmate, later the national priestess, Driang (sounds similar to John), chose to leave the turbulent kingdom with her telepathic cat called Li.
Drifting along the Mi-lo River in a Jane Eyre-esque reverie, Driang confided in Li that she had received a message in a dream: Jwei’s soul was not at peace. The rites to summon his spirit require strong emotion from the person who performs them. However, as a semi-deified shaman, Driang suffered from a shrunken limbic system and a resulting dopamine disorder that made her unable to produce proper human emotion (and Li was alexithymically nonchalant as all cats are). Finally, Driang resolved to turn the rite into a confiding Freudian dialogue.

楚靈王，名圍，是中國歷史上著名的暴君，於周代公元前 540 至 529 年間統治楚國。一場民變之後，他出逃成了亡命之徒，不久便自盡。他兒時的玩伴、後來的國巫 Driang（讀音近於 John），選擇帶著她那隻能心電感應的貓「狸」離開這個動盪的國度。
在《簡‧愛》式的遐想中沿汨羅江漂流，Driang 向狸吐露：她在夢中收到一則訊息——圍的魂魄並不安寧。召喚其亡靈的儀式，需要施行者投入強烈的情感；然而身為半神化的薩滿，Driang 卻患有萎縮的邊緣系統，以及由此而來的多巴胺失調，使她無法產生正常的人類情感（而狸則一如所有的貓，帶著述情障礙般的漠然）。最終，Driang 決意把這場儀式，轉化為一段傾訴式的佛洛伊德對話。
