Adso e Guglielmo contemplano il portale della chiesa.
Adso and Guglielmo contemplate the portal of the church.

Il portale scolpito mostra Cristo Re attorniato da quattro animali terribili e, sotto a un mare di cristalli, ventiquattro saggi seduti in trono con movenze di danza estatica. Di seguito appaiono tre coppie di leoni incrociati, quattro santi e tutti gli animali del bestiario di Satana con le sette trombe dell’Apocalisse.
The sculpted portal shows Christ the King surrounded by four terrible animals and, beneath a sea of crystals, twenty-four elders seated upon thrones with movements of ecstatic dance. Then appear three pairs of intercrossed lions, four saints, and all the animals of Satan’s bestiary with the seven trumpets of the Apocalypse.

Una voce di tromba chiede ad Adso di raccontare quello che vede.
A trumpet voice asks Adso to recount what he sees.

et stellarum.
and the stars, was struck.

And the fifth angel sounded his trumpet:
et stella de caelo cecidit in terram.
and a star fell from heaven to earth.
Et sextus angelus tuba cecinit:
And the sixth angel sounded his trumpet:
et de ore equorum procedit ignis.
and fire came out of the horses’ mouths.
Et septimus angelus tuba cecinit,
And the seventh angel sounded his trumpet,
et voces magnae dicentes:
and loud voices said:
“Factum est regnum huius mundi Domini nostri
“The kingdom of this world has become our Lord’s
et Christi eius, et regnabit in saecula saeculorum.
