SETTIMO GIORNO
Seventh Day

Stanza XXIII – Nel finis Africae <Si>
Room XXIII – In the finis Africae <B>

Al centro di una stanza, un tavolo colmo di carte, e dietro al tavolo una figura seduta.
At the center of a room, a table covered with papers, and behind the table a seated figure.

Guglielmo
Felice notte, Jorge, ci attendevi?
Happy night, Jorge; were you awaiting us?

(Si sentono dei colpi contro la parete.)
(Blows are heard against the wall.)

Jorge
Sei tu, Guglielmo?
Is that you, Guglielmo?

Guglielmo
È l’Abate che batte dietro al muro?
Is that the Abbot beating behind the wall?
Vorrei salvarlo.
I would like to save him.

Jorge
Troppo tardi, senza più aria, l’Abate è morto.
Too late; with no more air, the Abbot is dead.

Guglielmo
Perché lo hai ucciso?
Why did you kill him?

Jorge
Grazie a te, sapeva.
Thanks to you, he knew.
Voleva farmi espiare con la morte… è morto lui.
He wanted to make me expiate with death… he died instead.

Guglielmo
Dov’è il libro?
Where is the book?
Per quel libro Adelmo
For that book Adelmo
si è concesso a Berengario,
gave himself to Berengario,
e tu, non assolvendolo,
and you, by not absolving him,
l’hai spinto al suicidio.
impelled him to suicide.
Per quel libro è morto
For that book died
Venanzio il traduttore,
Venanzio the translator,
cercando acqua in cucina,
seeking water in the kitchen
perché arso dal veleno.
because he was burning from the poison.
Per quel libro è annegato
For that book drowned
Berengario, che ha nascosto
Berengario, who had hidden
dentro l’orcio
inside the vat
il corpo di Venanzio.
Venanzio’s body.
Per quel libro Malachia
For that book Malachia
ha ucciso Severino,
killed Severino,
mosso dalla gelosia
moved by jealousy
che gli avevi istillato.
you had instilled in him.
Infine, il libro ha avvelenato
Finally, the book poisoned
Malachia:
Malachia:
sei stato tu
it was you
a portarli alla morte.
who brought them to death.
È andata così?
Is that how it went?

Jorge
Più o meno.
More or less.

Guglielmo
Che stupido!
How stupid!

Jorge
Chi?
Who?

Guglielmo
Io…
I…
Credevo di vedere in ciascuna delle morti
I believed I saw in each of the deaths
lo schema delle trombe dell’Apocalisse:
the schema of the trumpets of the Apocalypse:
la grandine per Adelmo,
the hail for Adelmo,
il sangue per Venanzio,
the blood for Venanzio,
l’acqua per Berengario,
the water for Berengario,
il cielo per Severino,
the sky for Severino,
e gli scorpioni…
and the scorpions…
che sono una tua idea
which were an idea of yours
per dire a Malachia
to tell Malachia
di non aprire il libro.
not to open the book.

Jorge
Va bene, so che sai.
Very well, I know that you know.
E ora cosa vuoi?
And now what do you want?

Guglielmo
Voglio quel libro in greco
I want that book in Greek
che hai portato dalla Spagna.
that you brought from Spain.
Voglio quel libro che si credeva
I want that book which was believed
perduto oppure mai scritto.
lost or never written.
Voglio quel libro che hai nascosto
I want that book which you hid
perché non sia letto.
so that it would not be read.
Voglio il secondo libro
I want the second book
della Poetica di Aristotele.
of Aristotle’s Poetics.

Jorge
Così sai proprio tutto,
So you truly know everything;
non a caso ti aspettavo.
not by chance was I awaiting you.
Vieni, siedi, leggi, sfoglia:
Come, sit, read, turn the leaves:
è tuo, lo hai meritato.
it is yours; you have merited it.

(Guglielmo si mette un paio di guanti e inizia a leggere)
(Guglielmo puts on a pair of gloves and begins to read.)

Guglielmo
Nel primo libro abbiamo trattato della tragedia,
In the first book we treated of tragedy;
trattiamo ora della commedia…
let us now treat of comedy…
L’uomo è capace di ridere…
Man is capable of laughing…
I venerandi fichi…
The venerable figs…
La pietra svergognata…
The shameless stone…

Jorge

(incalzando Guglielmo)
(pressing Guglielmo)

Su, sfoglia, sfoglia ancora.
Come, turn the leaves, turn again.

Guglielmo
Ah! Ah! Allora non è vero
Ah! Ah! Then it is not true
che mi credi così acuto.
that you believe me so acute.
Non lo vedi ma ho i guanti.
You cannot see it, but I have gloves.
Non posso inumidirmi
I cannot moisten
le dita sulla lingua
my fingers on my tongue
per sfogliare questo libro,
to turn the leaves of this book,
ingerendo quel veleno
ingesting that poison
che hai sottratto a Severino
which you stole from Severino
e cosparso sulle pagine.
and spread upon the pages.
E ora dimmi, perché?
And now tell me: why?

Jorge
Perché era di Aristotele,
Because it was Aristotle’s,
perché era del Filosofo.
because it was the Philosopher’s.
Se questo libro uscisse
If this book were to leave
dalla nostra biblioteca,
from our library,
giustificando il riso
justifying laughter
come degna medicina,
as a worthy medicine,
il caos trionferebbe,
chaos would triumph,
sparirebbe la paura:
fear would disappear:
chi non teme il demonio
he who does not fear the devil
non teme più la morte.
no longer fears death.
Se conduce i suoi seguaci
If he conducts his followers
ad una folle ribellione,
to a mad rebellion,
fra Dolcino è il re di un giorno
Fra Dolcino is king for a day,
e il giorno dopo è fatto a pezzi.
and the day after is torn to pieces.
Se il villano ride quando il vino
If the villein laughs when the wine
gli gorgoglia in gola,
gurgles in his throat,
il suo riso si consuma come fosse
his laughter is spent as though it were
a carnevale.
Carnival.
E il riso è una bestemmia,
And laughter is a blasphemy,
il riso è corruzione,
laughter is corruption,
il riso è carne sterile,
laughter is sterile flesh,
il riso è follia vana.
laughter is vain folly.
Ma qui viene elogiato,
But here it is praised,
qui lo si eleva ad arte:
here it is elevated to art:
gli si aprono le porte
to it are opened the doors
di una teologia perversa.
of a perverse theology.
La legge non può imporsi
The law cannot impose itself
legittimando il riso:
by legitimating laughter:
la fede si difende
faith defends itself
solo col timor di Dio.
only with the fear of God.
E la legge è sacramento,
And the law is sacrament,
la legge è santità,
the law is sanctity,
la legge è puro spirito,
the law is pure spirit,
la legge è sacra scienza.
the law is sacred science.
In questo libro il riso
In this book laughter
nasconde una scintilla
conceals a spark
che appiccherebbe al mondo
that would set the world alight
le fiamme del demonio.
with the flames of the devil.

Guglielmo
Tu sei il diavolo.
You are the devil.

Jorge
Io?
I?

Guglielmo
Sì, ti hanno mentito.
Yes, they lied to you.
Il diavolo è spirito arrogante,
The devil is an arrogant spirit,
il diavolo è fede che non ride,
the devil is faith that does not laugh,
il diavolo è assenza di ogni dubbio,
the devil is the absence of every doubt,
il diavolo è un dogma vecchio e cieco.
the devil is an old and blind dogma.
Io ti odio, e se potessi
I hate you, and if I could
ti condurrei giù nudo
I would conduct you down naked,
con penne di volatili
with birds’ feathers
infilate su nel culo,
stuck up your arse,
avvolto nelle piume,
wrapped in plumage,
perché ridano di te,
so that they might laugh at you,
portato al guinzaglio
led on a leash
in giro per le fiere.
around the fairs.
E direi a tutti quanti:
And I would say to everyone:
“Guardate, guardatelo,
“Look, look at him,
questo merlo goffo
this clumsy blackbird
dalla faccia di buffone,
with a buffoon’s face,
che annunciava verità
who announced truth
col sapore della morte”.
with the flavor of death.”

Jorge
Tu sei peggio del Diavolo,
You are worse than the Devil,
giullare minorita,
Minorite jester;
sei come il tuo Francesco,
you are like your Francesco,
che parlava con gli uccelli.
who spoke with the birds.
Io sono stato la mano di Dio.
I have been the hand of God.

Guglielmo
La mano di Dio crea, non nasconde.
The hand of God creates; it does not conceal.
Adesso basta,
Enough now:
ti ho trovato
I have found you,
e sono tutti morti invano.
and they are all dead in vain.

Jorge
Un’altra morte non sarà di troppo.
One more death will not be too many.

Guglielmo
Cosa fai?
What are you doing?

(Jorge comincia a lacerare il manoscritto portandone i brandelli alla bocca)
(Jorge begins to tear the manuscript, bringing the fragments to his mouth.)

Jorge
Ascolta la settima tromba!
Listen to the seventh trumpet!
Accipe et devora illum;
Take it and eat it;
et faciet amaricare ventrem tuum,
it will make your stomach bitter,
sed in ore tuo erit dulcis tamquam mel.
but in your mouth it will be sweet like honey.
Vedi? Ora sigillo
You see? Now I seal
ciò che non andava detto
what ought not to be said
nella tomba che divento.
in the tomb that I become.

(Guglielmo cerca di sottrargli il libro. Jorge lo allontana e, guidato dal calore spegne il lume di Adso per poi dileguarsi nel buio.)
(Guglielmo tries to wrest the book from him. Jorge pushes him away and, guided by the heat, extinguishes Adso’s lamp, then vanishes into the dark.)
