Room IV - Venanzio <D>

Un grande tavolo, un enorme forno, da una porta che dà sull’aia entra Salvatore.
A great table, an enormous oven; Salvatore enters through a door that opens onto the farmyard.

Salvatore

(canticchiando tra sé)
(humming to himself)

… Femena che vendese
… A woman who is sold
como mercandia,
as merchandise,
no po’ nunca bon essere,
can never be good,
nì aver cortesia…
nor have courtesy…

Vene.
Come.

(Fa entrare la Ragazza del Villaggio ed esce. Dopo poco tempo entra Remigio con un involucro in mano e si avvicina alla Ragazza. Mentre comincia a spogliarla, dalle scale dello scriptorium irrompe Venanzio agonizzante chiedendo acqua)
(He lets the Village Girl enter and exits. After a short time Remigio enters with a packet in his hand and approaches the Girl. As he begins to undress her, the dying Venanzio bursts down the stairs of the scriptorium, asking for water.)

… ac … ac… qua … acqua …
… wa … wa… ter … water …

(Remigio e la Ragazza scappano. Venanzio cerca di riempire d’acqua un boccale ma, facendolo cadere per terra, muore. Un’ombra, Berengario, trascina via il cadavere.)
(Remigio and the Girl flee. Venanzio tries to fill a tankard with water but, letting it fall to the ground, dies. A shadow, Berengario, drags away the corpse.)
