(Jorge ride)
(Jorge laughs.)

Guglielmo

(accorgendosi che Jorge li sta chiudendo dentro)
(realizing that Jorge is shutting them in)

Adso, le specchio!
Adso, the mirror!
Ci sta chiudendo dentro!
He is shutting us in!

(Adso e Guglielmo riescono a impedire la chiusura della porta)
(Adso and Guglielmo manage to prevent the door from closing.)

Guglielmo
Presto, presto, riaccendi il lume!
Quickly, quickly, relight the lamp!

(Sentono un rumore)
(They hear a noise.)

Di là!
That way!

(Adso e Guglielmo raggiungono Jorge e gli precipitano addosso bloccandolo; Jorge afferra il lume di Adso e lo getta tra i libri. Il fuoco divampa rapidamente, i tentativi di fermarlo sono inutili. Le campane cominciano a suonare. Progressivamente il fuoco distrugge la biblioteca, la chiesa e tutta l’abbazia. Uomini e animali in fiamme fuggono in ogni direzione. (Adso and Guglielmo reach Jorge and fall upon him, pinning him down; Jorge seizes Adso’s lamp and throws it among the books. The fire flares rapidly; attempts to stop it are useless. The bells begin to sound. Progressively the fire destroys the library, the church, and the entire Abbey. Men and animals in flames flee in every direction. As the chorus articulates the names of the letters in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, fragments of the books’ burned pages, driven by the wind, begin to flutter in the air.)
