Di notte, nelle cucine. Adso giace a terra svenuto accanto all’involto.
At night, in the kitchens. Adso lies unconscious on the ground beside the bundle.

Guglielmo

(bagnandogli il volto)
(wetting his face)

Su su ragazzo.
Come, come, boy.
Cos’è successo?
What happened?
Giri di notte?
Roaming at night?
Rubi frattaglie?
Stealing offal?

Adso

(riprendendosi e indicando il cuore nell’involto)
(coming to and pointing to the heart in the bundle)

… un nuovo delitto!
… a new crime!

Guglielmo

(sorridendo)
(smiling)

Ti sembra un cuore d’uomo?
Does it look like a human heart to you?
Non vedi che è di bue?
Don’t you see that it is an ox’s?
Perché è tra le tue mani?
Why is it in your hands?

Adso
Non capisco.
I don’t understand.

Guglielmo
Piuttosto dimmi…
Rather, tell me…
Mentre ti cercavo
While I was looking for you
ho visto un’ombra
I saw a shadow
che fuggiva…

(turbato)
(perturbed)

… è fuggita?
… she fled?

Guglielmo
Ma t’ha lasciato il cuore!

… come l’aurora,

bella e terribile…
beautiful and terrible…
Padre, ho peccato!

Si dice che la donna

(guardando l’involto)

la ragazza si incontrava

Una ragazza povera;
A poor girl;
se potesse, si darebbe

solo per amore.

Chi è quest’uomo brutto e vecchio?
Who is this ugly old man?

Guglielmo
O il Cellario.
Or the Cellarer.
Li ho visti confabulare.
